Training Strategies for the Female-Bodied Athlete
Lessons from research and experience for athletes wishing to train in alignment with their menstrual cycle--and key adjustments to keep thriving through peri- and post-menopause
Let’s start with the good news—in the last few years, research on female athletes has increased by 50% The bad news? It’s gone from 4 to 6% of the total exercise science research… yikes. So how do you train when you’re not adequately represented in the research?
Come by Colchuck Consignment at 7pm, February 20th, to hear about what the research is starting to reveal about training for female bodied athletes, from pre- to peri- and post-menopause. Lyra Pierotti of MOVEmentum Training will present some of the current science, share things she has learned from coaching athletes (and being a lifelong athlete), and present some tools to help you tune in and personalize your training.
All are welcome! The differences are critical for all who exercise to understand, so we can support each others’ athleticism and avoid unhelpful, unrepresentative, and uninformed training advice. You’ll leave with a list of monitoring tools and an abundance of training tips for all phases of a female athlete’s life.
Lyra Pierotti is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and an IFMGA Licensed Mountain Guide. Her career as a coach started out of necessity: Injury and overtraining threatened to end her beloved guiding career at just 30 years old. The common training approaches just weren’t working. Now 40, she is enjoying all of it more than ever, and looking forward to the next decade—armed with experience and a growing body of research to support female athletes through the menopause transition, and beyond.
